IELTS tests an individual’s fluency in English language in four ways which brings out their true hold on it. They are reading, writing, speaking and listening. In our day to day life also, we interact with people in using these four basic skills. Hence, IELTS is preparing us adapt better in such an environment. Let’s understand the pattern of the exam for a better clarity.
As students and working professionals have separate goals of migration, hence the exam pattern differs for both the scenarios. The difference basically lies in the reading section and one task of writing section which has a total of two tasks. Listening and speaking remains same for both the versions. The exam conducted for a student visa is IELTS Academic and the one conducted for getting permanent residency or work permit is IELTS General Training. IELTS coaching also depends on these factors. Let’s consider all the modules separately:
Reading: The reading section includes 40 questions in total of one mark each. The candidates are required to solve all the 40 questions in one hour. In Academic section, there are 3 passages related to different subjects under sun. In General Training, there are 3 to 4 passages of somewhat easy level as compared to academic one.
Listening: Listening remains same for both the versions. There are 40 questions in total to be answered in a time span of 30 minutes. An audio runs and candidates are given the question paper and answer sheet. The audio which runs is basically a conversation or a lecture which has answer to all the questions. The job here is to listen carefully without losing concentration and answer all the questions in time.
Speaking: Speaking remains same for both the versions of exam. It is one on one conversation with the examiner and lasts for 20-25 minutes. There are three sections of the exam. The first consists of general questions asked from the candidate about his or her personality or daily life. The second section includes a cue card which is a situation presented to the candidate and he or she has to speak on it for 1-2 minutes. The third and the final section involve follow up questions related to the cue card.
Writing: The writing section includes two tasks in both the versions of exam. The second task, that is an essay on a generic subject remains same whereas task one is different. In Academic IELTS, it is related to interpreting a given data where as in General IELTS, it is a letter(formal, semi-formal or informal). The time given to complete writing task is also 1 hour.
