Until now there have been\u00a0several confusions about <a href=\"https:\/\/newcambridgecollege.com\/spoken-english-classes-coaching-in-chandigarh\"><strong>English Grammar<\/strong><\/a> that we encounter but we ignore them by simply using them whichever way we like. So, here are some examples of commonly used words whose usage is confused with another similarly applied word. We hope after reading this article you will be able to resolve your doubts and then use accurate grammar.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3>\u201cLike\u201d V\/s \u201csuch as\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A common mistake that we tend to make is use \u201csuch as\u201d and \u201clike\u201d as a substitute for another, or mostly use \u201clike\u201d when \u201csuch as\u201d should be applied in a sentence. However the actual rule that we are not aware of behind the application of these two words is \u201clike\u201d excludes; \u201csuch as\u201d includes. One must use \u201csuch as\u201d when giving examples of something, and \u201clike\u201d when one has to express similarity. Let\u2019s make it more clear with few examples:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cCelebrities like Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone are used to being clicked.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cCelebrities, such as Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone, are used to being clicked.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the first sentence, we\u2019re talking about any celebrity who is a part of Bollywood with BIG B and Deepika; not necessarily these two specific stars\u2013 just ones like them. In the second sentence, we\u2019re naming both of them as specific examples of actors who are used to being clicked because that is how their profession of being on celluloid has made them.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3>\u201cAs\u201d V\/S \u201csince\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em><strong>\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s been years since I last rode a cycle, as I moved to the city.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is an incorrect application of the word \u2018As\u2019. This is another innocent grammatical error we tend to commit by using \u201cas\u201d and \u201csince\u201d interchangeably. The simple rule behind the usage of these two words is -\u201cas\u201d is causal; \u201c, think of \u201csince\u201d as being associated to time. A grammatically correct example would be:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s been years since I\u2019ve ridden a cycle.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u2018\u2019I haven\u2019t been able to ride a cycle as it is not a trend in the city.\u2019\u2019<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h3>\u201c-ed\u201d V\/S \u201c-nt\u201d endings<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Many speakers are in a dilemma whether a word should end in \u201c-ed\u201d or \u201c-nt\u201d: should it be \u201cburned\u201d or \u201cburnt\u201d, for example? The rule is that \u201c-ed\u201d is the past tense form; \u201c-nt\u201d is the participle form. For instance, \u201cshe burned theold documents\u201d is correct because we\u2019re talking about an action \u2013 the burning\u2013 taking place in the past. Another example of the participle use of the verb \u201cto burn\u201d would be \u201cburnt ashes\u201d . Another example of this rule is \u201clearned\u201d versus \u201clearnt\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cshe learned the poem\u201d versus \u201cthe poem is learnt by her\u201d.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h3>\u201cThat\u201d V\/S \u201cwhich\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The case with \u2018\u2019that\u2019\u2019 and \u2018\u2019which\u2019\u2019 is \u201cthat\u201d defines; &amp; \u201cwhich\u201d informs, or adds extra information. For example:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<em>This is the dish that I have cooked for the dinner.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>This dish, which Tina made, looks better.<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the first sentence, \u201cthat\u201d is used to define the dish as being one made by me.
